To Bear What Must be Borne: Stories of Strength and Resilience

Doors open at 6:30pm. Stories at 7:30pm.

Strength is not merely defined by what we can carry, but also what we can let go. Resilience is not just withstanding turmoil, but rising above it to become the change we wish to see in the world. In today’s world, we all need a little strength and resilience, and sometimes it comes to us in unexpected ways. From the story of one woman’s struggle between her vulnerability and her conscience to the story of a pair of friends carrying each other during adversity, join us for four new stories at the Haymarket Pub and Brewery.

Curated by CP Chang. Directed by Amanda Delheimer Dimond.

This Is Where We Are: Stories Of Self And Acceptance

Doors at 7:00pm; stories at 7:30pm.

What happens when someone isn’t who we thought they were? What happens when that someone is us? A celebrity crush crashes an anniversary celebration; a woman wrestles the ghost haunting her new life; a child rules her new world with both velvet glove and iron fist; a mother struggles to give her daughter the world she never had. This month, our tellers search for answers as they search for themselves—whether they like what they find or not.

For the second year in a row, 2nd Story will be at The Teal Room at Pub 626 in Rogers Park for one full weekend every month. Tickets available online or at the door. See you there!

Curated by Andrew Reilly. Directed by Dorothy Milne and Mariana Green. Sound Design by Nick Kawahara.

Forging Ahead: Stories of Striving for Change

Doors at 7:00pm; stories at 7:30pm.

Talking politics is tricky. There’s the big “P” Politics: the operation of a government and its defined institutions and procedures.  Then there’s little “p” politics: how our daily lives are constructed, how individual people or groups have influence or power over each other. In light of the upcoming election, we ask ourselves: how does the political world play out in our everyday lives? In moments of decisions, we see what we stand for, and what we will stand up for. Join us for an evening of stories exploring how people make decisions as they strive to be better (and do better) for themselves and the world.

Curated by Reshmi Hazra Rustebakke. Directed by Thrisa Hodits. Sound Design by Ben Zeman.

Swimming Against the Tide: Stories of Fighting for Self

Doors at 7pm; stories at 7:30pm.

So often we are told “just do what feels right,” or “follow your heart.” But what if nothing feels right? Or being our truest selves isn’t safe? Or what if what we want and what we THINK we want are at odds? Hear three expert storytellers explore these questions, telling true stories about their experiences fighting for themselves and what they believe in.

Curated by Amanda Delheimer Dimond. Directed by Lexi Saunders.
