Producer of Artistic Programs

2nd Story seeks an individual to join our small (and mighty) staff in the role of Producer of Artistic Programs.

The Producer of Artistic Programs will work closely with the Artistic Director to support 2nd Story’s mission by overseeing the process of creating and executing 2nd Story events, classes, and workshops. This involves recruitment and placement of artists, management of production and teaching teams, collaboration with the remainder of the 2nd Story staff, and the facilitation of thorough internal and external communication.

A successful candidate will have experience in coordinating large and ever-changing groups of people, a high level of cultural competency, work experience (or deep interest) in the theatrical and storytelling community in Chicago, experience in a supervisory role, the ability to occasionally lift 40 lbs, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the desire to work collaboratively in a small artistic non-profit.


Reports To:  Artistic Director

Supervises:  Production and Education Personnel (Directly: Producers; Indirectly: Directors, Curators, Storytellers, Sound Designers, Musicians, Sound Engineers, Teaching Artists, Artistic Programs Intern)

Time Commitment:  10hrs – 25hrs/wk, pending work style and time of year.

Compensation:  Stipend negotiated at time of hire. This is a part-time position where the individual is hired as an independent contractor.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Personnel Placement for performances and workshops/classes.
    • Collaboration with the Artistic Director to identify program needs, create cohesive teams, and assess ability of team members to work within the 2nd Story format for performances, workshops, and classes.
    • Recruitment and placement of a diverse range of directors, sound designers, musicians, producers, storytellers, and teaching artists.
    • Coordination with Artistic Director to ensure curriculum has been prepared/archived for each workshop/class.
    • Maintenance of relationships with groups of collaborators to gather feedback on their experience and ensure their participation in future opportunities.
    • In collaboration with Managing Director, execute contracts for all collaborators.
    • Maintain accurate contact information for all collaborators.
    • In collaboration with Artistic Director, maintain on-boarding process and update and distribute on-boarding documents for all new and returning collaborators.
  2. Management
    • Ensure that thorough communication is maintained between team members.
    • In conjunction with Artistic Director, monitor progress of each event/program and troubleshooting problematic situations.
    • Collaborate with the Artistic Director to schedule and execute regular meetings of appropriate committees.
    • Manage Front of House volunteers and systems.
    • Delegation of duties to (and supervision of) Artistic Programs intern, as desired.
  3. Venue Relations & For Hire Relationships
    • Serve as primary point of communication for all venues.
    • Collaborate with Managing Director to create and finalize contracts with new venues and provide support in resolving any ticketing/payment issues.
  4. Annual Season Planning Process
    • Coordination of annual submission process, including but not limited to:
      • Coordinating with Artistic Director and Marketing Manager to determine a schedule for submissions and a calendar for communication;
      • Overseeing collection, organization, and tracking (from arrival through final decision) of all submissions;
      • Coordinating a submission reading and letter writing party for the Collective, including correspondence with submitters.
      • Scheduling auditonees and managing paperwork and staffing for auditions.
      • Collaborate with Artistic Director in decision-making process around auditions and season planning.
  1. Marketing & Communications
    • Working with Marketing Manager to support their efforts to market programming streams.
  2. Miscellaneous
    • Equipment management
    • Load in Neighborhood shows (or creation of alternate plan)
